Every day we hear conflicting news about health. Last week wine killed; today it saves you from a heart attack. What does it really mean when the headlines shout "EAT CHOCOLATE, LOSE WEIGHT" or "ABANDON MAMMOGRAPHY"? Between the Lines arms you with the right tools to get under the hood of medical information.

Between the Lines Finding the Truth in Medical Literature 9780985456207 Medicine Health Science Books

There is no other book of this size that addresses the needs of the general public in understanding medical literature. If you are thrown in the claws of a rare disease or if you want to understand why some suggest that preventive tests are often times not necessary, this is probably a book to go to to learn out more about interpreting the studies.

The first half of the book is an easy read and helps the reader understand the context of scientific and clinical literature. The author's passion for science is contagious and the readers end up loving and wanting to understand more.

If a reader is not familiar with statistics and epidemiology vocabulary, the second part of the book that goes into details of what kind of studies are good for what kind of conclusions, is more difficult to read. One has to sit down with paper and pen and write down concepts that will be used in subsequent chapters. I think it would be easier if the reader had some graphs and charts to better grasp the concepts.

All in all this is a very good and necessary book for patients that want to better understand the science behind medical decisions.

Between the Lines Finding the Truth in Medical Literature 9780985456207 Medicine Health Science Books Reviews

I rarely provide any written reviews/feedback on books that I have read, but Dr. Zilberberg's recent publication "Between the Lines" is clearly worth sharing a few thoughts on. I am an oncology medical science liaison and therefore work with clinical trials and medical literature on a daily basis. Dr. Zilberberg's take on the "truth in medical literature" is as refreshingly entertaining as it is educational. She uses recent real world examples and high profile publications (i.e. Women's Health Initiative, mammogram screening controversy etc.) to illustrate perils and pitfalls of interpreting the results of such research.

Her sense of humor shines throughout the book, but light up especially those chapters that cover statistical analysis and methods that would could otherwise be dry and boring. Her quips such as "good results don't need fancy statistics" are supported and expanded on with her deep knowledge of the subject matter. She doesn't go into excruciating details, but provides enough depth covering study related analysis and methodology to make this suitable for a broad audience.

Overall, this has been an exceptionally enjoyable and educational book that I would recommend for anyone working in science or medicine. It will probably be one of the few books that I will actually reread after some time as a refresher.

I will gladly recommend this to any of my peers and colleagues and look forward to Dr. Zilberberg's next book project.
Not helpful to apply statistical knowledge to clinical practice is mostly a personal essay.
Really good, fairly short book. I would recommend this book. Gives a good overview of these issues.
Always reviewing books about medical literature for my course, Truth and Lies in Medical News. Zilberberg's book is excellent. I've added it two required reading in addition to Ben Goldacre's Bad Science.
Marya Zilberberg's book teaches you to read scientific paper in clear and fun way! It was the most dreaded subject in medical school and only years later, I am closing the gap.
It becomes even more important as every day we get bombarded by new studies and "evidence" and you have to make choices in what to believe, even if your objective is to make the most informed decision for yourself or for your family.
This is a very useful text for anyone interested in critically analyzing medical articles. A quick read, and an easy reference guide for anyone interested in improving their scientific literacy.
While patients find it hard to make sense of medical research, the sad truth is that most doctors are equally clueless. They treat every study as gospel truth, no matter how flawed it is. They have a poor understanding of statistics, which is why it's so easy for pharmaceutical companies and medical device manufacturers to take them for a ride, by publishing articles in medical journals.

Dr Marya Zilberberg starts from the basics, and reading this book will help doctors understand what p is less than 0.05 really
means !
